HONOLULU — A draft environmental assessment (Draft EA) detailing proposed improvements to the Mālaekahana State Recreation Area, Kahuku section for continued recreational use including camping, lodging and day use activities is now available for public review and comment.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of State Parks plans to replace aging infrastructure that was installed prior to the state’s acquisition of the property in 1980, due to wear, obsolescence and more stringent standards for regulatory compliance.
Plans include the installation of new utility infrastructure and construction of a central comfort station and satellite restroom facilities and showers along with related improvements intended to continue the current levels of recreational use of the area.
The proposed improvements may be constructed in phases upon available funding. A future lessee may be required to complete the project in case project funding is limited.
