People Can Watch Anytime

(HONOLULU)  An editorial in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser said a new documentary from DLNR “will demonstrate, in a vivid way, the apparent contempt these illegal campers hold for Hawaii’s fragile natural beauty.”  Renegades, Risks, & Rewards of the Napali Coast was broadcast twice last weekend by Honolulu television station KFVE (K5) and is now available for free online viewing: www.vimeo.com/160160022

Whether you have already visited the fabled Napali Coast and hiked the Kalalau Trail, or if you’re planning a trip, this documentary is worth watching.  “While it focuses on the particular challenges we face on Kauai’s Napali Coast, some of the issues are similar to those we face in state parks and on other public lands across Hawaii.  Our hope is when people watch this ½ hour-long show, they’ll not only come away with an enhanced appreciation for Hawaii’s special and unique natural and cultural landscapes, but will be prompted to take action,” said DLNR Chair Suzanne Case.  She added, “Everyone who loves Hawaii will undoubtedly be disturbed and distressed by the actions of illegal campers and transportation operators, will hopefully not participate in these sorts of actions themselves, and will bring pressure to bear on anyone they know who might.”

As the Star-Advertiser editorialized, “It’s hoped that the documentary will do more than spark concern. It should remind us that respect for Hawaii’s environment must be learned from an early age. It’s a simple lesson, one taught to every Boy and Girl Scout about camping: Leave no trace.”
