HDOT NEWS RELEASE: H-1 freeway eastbound Bingham Street offramp closed over a 24-hour period on April 12-13Posted on Apr 13, 2017 in Latest News
HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) alerts the public that the Bingham Street offramp (Exit 24A) from the eastbound H-1 Freeway will be closed over a 24-hour period on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 through Thursday, April 13, 2017, for pavement reconstruction work. Roadwork may continue on Friday, April 14, 2017, if construction is not completed. Eastbound H-1 Freeway motorists are advised to use alternate routes such as the Punahou Street offramp (Exit 23) and University Avenue offramp (Exit 24B).
During the current pavement resurfacing work crews discovered the base condition of the material beneath surface was worse than anticipated. This area has had problems in the past with rutting pavement. Instead of replacing the surface, HDOT chose to fix the problem beyond the original scope. Crews will replace the base down to three feet and will reinforce the geogrid and geotextile materials that will provide greater support for the high volume of traffic in the area. An eight-inch layer of asphalt will cover the reconstructed base. The work will extend more than two times the original area to help prevent additional problems in the future.
Crews are limited to work at the site between 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily because the original plan did not call for overnight work. The roadway cannot be reopened overnight because the hole in the street is too large to cover with the steel plates. Residents, emergency vehicles and TheBus will not be allowed through the work zone as the roadway will not be drivable during this time.
Message boards have been placed on the H-1 Freeway eastbound and Bingham Street to alert drivers the offramp is closed 24 hours a day.
Motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time to get to their destinations and use helpful resources like GoAkamai.org which provides up to the minute traffic conditions, drive times and cameras key roadways. HDOT thanks the public for their cooperation as we work to improve our state roadways.
