HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is proud to be a sponsor for the 10th annual Hawaii Construction and Career Days event that will take place on October 27 and 28, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Aloha Stadium, lower Halawa lot. Construction Career Days is an annual two-day free event designed to provide high school and college students with a hands on experience with career and educational opportunities that are available in Hawaii’s construction industry. Participants will be able to operate heavy construction equipment, test their skills on a crane simulator, compete in skill building activities and much more.
“HDOT is proud to give back to the community and our future contractors and skilled workers,” said Ford Fuchigami, Hawaii Department of Transportation Director. “Events like this help paint the picture for our youth about what a career in construction might look like.”
For safety and added realism, each student will be provided with a back pack, hard hat, safety goggles, and earplugs to wear as they circulate through the two event areas.
The “Trades” area will feature representatives from carpenters, painters, tapers, floor layers, glaziers, electricians, laborers, masons, operating engineers, plumbers, roofers, insulators, and ironworkers.
In the “Heavy Equipment” area, students will have the opportunity to operate an excavator, or a crane simulator, ride a scissors lift and other pieces of specialized equipment.
Throughout the day, students may also visit various booths with information on educational opportunities in the construction field as well as learn about career paths from industry representatives. The University of Hawaii College of Engineering and School of Architecture and the Honolulu Community College are participating at this year’s event.
Media is invited to the event. Journalists are asked to contact Tim Sakahara at 808-587-2160 or firstname.lastname@example.org for additional details.
