HDOT News Release: Resurfacing of Kalanianaole Highway from H-1 Freeway to West Hind Drive continuesPosted on Jul 17, 2018 in Latest News
HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) offers the following updates on the Kalanianaole Highway Resurfacing, Interstate Route H-1 to West Hind Drive:
• Pavement – HDOT has identified several areas in the resurfaced eastbound lanes, across all three lanes of Kalanianaole Highway’s connection with the H-1 Freeway and at the drainage bridge area, to be addressed this week. The pavement modulations observed throughout the rest of the resurfacing project will be addressed this week. An HDOT survey crew will provide additional details to the Contractor to ensure smoother paving of the westbound lanes.
• Signal Timing – As part of the resurfacing project, the loop detectors at the intersections from Ainakoa Avenue to West Hind Drive were cut. The signals along this corridor reverted to base timing, which triggered left turn signals on a schedule instead of on demand, negatively impacting the AM westbound commute. Microwave sensors are being installed starting at the Ainakoa Avenue and each of the affected intersections as a temporary measure to improve timing. Loop detectors will be reinstalled and connected to key intersections prior to the project completion in September.
• Access to Bike/Pedestrian Facilities – The bikeway on the ramp from Kilauea Avenue may be modified Tuesday, July 17, 2018 to maintain two eastbound lanes during work hours (8 p.m. to 4 a.m.) from the H-1 Freeway to Ainakoa Avenue. Bicyclists and pedestrians will be escorted or routed through the area during the work.
