HONOLULU – Attorney General Clare E. Connors announced that Kimberly Tsumoto Guidry became the new Solicitor General for the State of Hawai`i.

The Solicitor General has oversight authority over most state and federal appeals in the Attorney General’s office, including briefs filed on behalf of the State of Hawai`i in the United States Supreme Court.

Guidry is a 17-year veteran of the Department of the Attorney General having joined the department’s appellate division in 2002.  For the past eight years she has served as First Deputy Solicitor General.  Guidry is a member of the Hawai`i Supreme Court’s Standing Committee on the Hawai`i Rules of Appellate Procedure and recently completed her first three-year term as a member of the Board of Bar Examiners of the Hawai`i Supreme Court.

Throughout her career with the department, Guidry has litigated many complex appellate cases in State and federal appellate courts on a wide array of issues.  Her diverse practice experience includes having served as counsel of record on a multi-state U.S. Supreme Court amicus brief on a criminal sentencing issue, and successfully defending the State’s use tax scheme against a constitutional challenge that was heard by the Hawai`i Supreme Court.

“Kim’s devotion to public service and her years of appellate experience make her an invaluable asset to our department,” said Attorney General Connors. “I am confident that with these qualities, and her commitment to justice and the rule of law, Kim will provide the State of Hawai`i with exceptional representation for years to come.”

Guidry is a graduate of Kalani High School, and attended the University of Hawai`i at Manoa, where she earned a B.A. in history with highest honors and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society.  She earned her law degree from the University of Hawai`i William S. Richardson School of Law, where she served as an editor of the Asian Pacific Law and Policy Journal.
