News release from DLNR – KAMANANUI VALLEY ROAD (TRAILHEAD) AND KULANAAHANE TRAIL TO CLOSE MARCH 10-11 FOR POWER LINE WORKPosted on Mar 5, 2018 in Latest Department News
HONOLULU — Public access into Kamananui Valley in Moanalua, including the Moanalua Valley road and Kulana‘ahane trail, will be closed, on Saturday March 10 and Sunday 11 as HECO repair crews are scheduled to install two shield wires from Tripler to Red Hill, spanning across Moanalua Valley.
The closures are issued in the interest of public safety, in the unlikely case power lines fall while being installed. Recreational users of the valley are encouraged to find other venues to visit during the closure. Hiking and hunting alternatives can be found on the Na Ala Hele Trails and Access Program website at: hawaiitrails.hawaii.gov.
During these two days, a separate project of ongoing road repairs to the Kamananui Valley Road and the popular Kulana‘ahane hiking trail will be suspended. These repairs are intended to improve safety for all valley users by redirecting water flow and mitigating erosion. Additional work will allow better access for service vehicles by leveling deeply rutted portions and removing large boulders. For more information on the project and schedule see https://hawaiitrails.hawaii.gov/trails/api/fs/2vbyxvy3nullD83swduEU.pdf
Potential visitors to Moanalua Valley are encouraged to visit the Na Ala Hele, DOFAW Trail and Access website at: hawaiitrails.hawaii.gov for up-to-date project information and alternate routes. Hunting permits for Moanalua Valley will be issued on a case-by-case basis. For more hunting information, please contact the DOFAW offices at (808)587-0166 or via email at [email protected]
