ABOUT THE GOVERNOR

Josh Green, M.D.

Governor Josh Green is a proud husband, father, and physician. For the past 20 years, Governor Green cared for Big Island families as a doctor. He served in the State House of Representatives and the State Senate from 2004 to 2018. As chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, he passed “Luke’s Law,” which provides care for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as tobacco and e-cigarette regulations, which increased the legal age for purchasing tobacco and e-cigarettes to 21. Passionate about housing solutions, Governor Green helped create “Kauhale” communities to get unsheltered veterans, kūpuna, and others into safe housing options. These efforts are ongoing and will continue to be one of his top priorities as Governor.  Governor Green expanded the role of Lieutenant Governor by spearheading the largest healthcare response in state history during the COVID pandemic. These critical emergency efforts resulted in Hawaiʻi having the nation’s lowest COVID-19 fatality rate.

Today, I had the honor of signing Act 173 into law — a major step forward to protect the earnings of Hawai‘i’s young performers — and an even greater honor of proclaiming Maia Kealoha, the star of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, as Junior Governor of the State of Hawai‘i!

Act 173 ensures that at least 15% of a child performer’s income is placed in a trust they can access when they become an adult, shielding their hard-earned money from exploitation or mismanagement. It’s about fairness, security and setting our keiki up for success.

Maia is proof of the incredible talent growing right here at home — proud, gifted, and grounded. With this law, we’re making sure young performers can chase their dreams and still have something to show for it when they grow up. And if today was any indication, Junior Governor Kealoha is more than ready to lead the way.

Proud to sign Act 173 into law today — protecting the earnings of Hawai‘i’s young performers and making sure their futures are just as bright as their talents.

This new law requires 15% of a child performer’s income to be set aside in a trust they can access when they reach adulthood. It’s a smart, compassionate step that gives our keiki both opportunity and protection as they pursue careers in entertainment.

Even prouder to be joined by the incredible Maia Kealoha — Hawai‘i’s own rising star and the new Junior Governor of the State of Hawai‘i. Her heart remind us all what our keiki are capable of.

With Act 173, we’re not just supporting young entertainers — we’re investing in their future.

It was a deep honor to speak at the 2025 Hawaiian Home Lands Sovereignty Conference this morning.

Mahalo to the Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations for 38 years of leadership and advocacy. You’ve held the line, generation after generation, and your work is now pushing real change into motion.

Mahalo to Director Kali Watson and the DHHL team, your efforts to award thousands of leases and create new paths to homeownership are nothing short of transformational. This year alone, more than 2,600 lots are being awarded, but there’s more to do.

We cannot allow another generation of Native Hawaiians to be priced out or pushed away from their own homeland. The fact that more Native Hawaiians now live outside of Hawai‘i than in it — for the first time in 2,000 years — should stop all of us in our tracks. But the solution is here: housing. Real homes. Real opportunity. And we’re finally seeing it take shape.

To all the keiki who were there today, mahalo. You are the next generation of leaders, builders, and protectors of this ʻāina. Everything we do now is to make sure you have a place here, and a future here.

We carry a constitutional responsibility to get this right. And I’m committed to doing that work with you, not for you. Together, let’s build a Hawai‘i where Hawaiian families can thrive, right here at home.
