UPDATE: Sheriffs apprehend missing work furlough inmate in Kāneʻohe

 

HONOLULU — Laumaka work furlough inmate Chauncey K. Lopes was returned to custody at the O’ahu Community Correctional Center (OCCC) after state sheriffs’ deputies apprehended him in Kāneʻohe at approximately 8:15 a.m. today, Sept. 16, 2024.

 

He may face an escape charge, a Class C felony that’s punishable by up to five years in prison, if convicted. 

 

Lopes, 25, failed to return to the Laumaka Work Furlough Center by 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024. Sheriffs and the Honolulu Police Department were notified.

 

Lopes is serving time for manslaughter.

 

He is a community custody inmate in the work furlough program with pass privileges. Community custody is the lowest classification status.

 

Laumaka is a minimum-security work furlough center for community custody inmates. Inmates assigned to Laumaka are either actively seeking employment or working in the community.
