PUBLIC INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN KAKAʻAKO MAKAI VISIONING WORKSHOP

HONOLULU – The Hawai‘i Community Development Authority (HCDA) invites the public to participate in a visioning workshop for the Kakaʻako Makai Area Plan update on Saturday, March 7, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Barn at SALT, 327 Keawe Street.

This public interactive workshop will bring together community members, stakeholders and subject matter experts to share ideas about the future of Kakaʻako Makai, approximately 170 acres of urban waterfront land in Honolulu. Participants will explore topics including public access, open space, cultural and recreational uses, urban design and coastal resilience.

“This workshop is an opportunity for the public to share its ideas and priorities for the future of Kakaʻako Makai,” said Craig Nakamoto, executive director of the Hawai‘i Community Development Authority. “We want to ensure that the updated area plan reflects the community’s values, vision and aspirations for this unique waterfront district.”

The Kakaʻako Makai Area Plan update is a comprehensive, community-informed effort to refresh the planning framework for Kakaʻako Makai, the makai portion of the Kakaʻako Community Development District. This initiative comes amid changes in land ownership, increased community interest and renewed legislative discussions about land use policies, including the current ban on residential development.

Building on previous planning efforts, this update aims to address the area’s mix of public open space, infrastructure needs, cultural and natural resources, while guiding a coordinated vision for the future and preserving the integrity of the shoreline.
