THE HAWAIʻI PUBLIC HOUSING AUTHORITY BREAKS GROUND ON NEW AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMMUNITY FOR SENIORS

Commencement of construction signifies a major accomplishment in responding to the housing needs of our elderly community

HONOLULU, HI — The Hawaiʻi Public Housing Authority (HPHA) is pleased to announce the groundbreaking ceremony for a new affordable housing complex for senior citizens on School Street. Today marks a turning point, as HPHA joined hands with Governor Josh Green M.D., Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, the Legislature, and Board Members to transform the area into a thriving community with affordable housing options for the elderly.

This groundbreaking ceremony is ahead of the legislative session in which housing remains a top priority for Governor Josh Green, M.D. “With this groundbreaking, we are building a stronger, more compassionate community for our seniors. These homes will foster a sense of fellowship, empowerment, and safety for our kūpuna,” said Governor Green. “By investing in housing for our senior community, we recognize the immense value they bring to our culture here in Hawai‘i.”

“Once completed, this land will provide an additional 800 units for senior community, ensuring affordable housing for a lifetime,” said HPHA Executive Director Hakim Ouansafi. “The chosen site has long been a gathering place for our State’s most vulnerable individuals who have lined up on these grounds for a chance at available housing units. We express our deepest gratitude to our development partners Highridge Costa Development Company, Form Partners, and Hawaiian Dredging, and our exceptional HPHA team for their unwavering dedication and commitment to this remarkable project. We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our long time partners at the Hawaii State Legislature and the City and County of Honolulu, our sister agency the Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation, our highly skilled and experienced consultants at EJP Consulting and Reno & Cavanaugh, along with all those involved in bringing affordable housing to fruition.  It is exciting that we are taking this first step together to make a positive impact on the lives of so many families in need.”
